Thank you for visiting Merrie's comments page. We would love it if you would Add

Over the past few months I have become a huge fan of Merrie's
music. I have a very successful House COncert series here in west central FL and
would love to host a show with her if she is interested and ever down this way.
My wife and I have had Ellis Paul, Cliff Eberhardt and try to keep the shows down
to ~5 per year so that we can promote better and keep quality high. Please let
us know if Merrie is ever in the state, and especially if we could host a show
for her. Crag

I'm not sure if this will get to you, Merrie. My name is Michael Leyden. I
met you at the Kendall during Eric Marcos's open mic. I'm not sure if you would
remember me, but we have spoken before. I believe the last time I saw you was
in Philadelphia. I have since moved back to the Boston area, Somerville to be
exact. I am currently working on a record and have a song that I know you would
sound beautiful on. I wanted to invite you to sing harmony on it. I don't know
if you do this, but I wanted to at least ask. It wouldn't take long and of course
I would pay you. If you are not interested, no problem. Good luck with your 2
upcoming albums. Thanks, Michael Leyen

How come Merrie's CD list on her rounder records web page says Season of Rain
was released in 1999? I know I bought it in 1997. I am not dreaming. Merrie, you
are so unusual as a musician. Just incredible work. Engaging atmosphere added
to each song. Beautiful lyrics, both striking and poetic. I love your music. Tara

Merrie, Just a quick note to say congrats and thanks for your great music.
It really is a small world when you come across a CD one day and realize that
the person you're listening to is the same girl you remember from Calvin College
almost 20 years ago, singing and playing her D-35 so well. Even more amazing is
finding out that this person has been living and working practically in your backyard
and you never knew it! I hope to see you perform live sometime soon. Good for
you, Merrie.

Folks: I make it a policy to send copies of reviews I write to the artists
and/or their record companies. Here's one I just sent off to a few publications,
including Rootsworld. Feel free to use it, so long as my name remains attached,
so people know who to blame. ######################################### Merrie
Amsterburg (http://www.qdivision.com/merrie/) Little Steps Zoë/Rounder 2000 (http://www.rounder.com)
by Jim Foley In 1996, I wrote of Merrie Amsterburg's debut album, "Season of Rain,"
as a powerful and affecting musical funeral pyre, and speculated how she might
possibly rise again from its ashes. "Little Steps," moody but not nearly so sepulchral,
redeems the four-year wait. Musical production manages to be simultaneously lush
and stark, characteristic of the recording's appealing paradoxes, including the
surprisingly effective mimicking of loungy drum machines with live percussion.
Amsterburg's lyrics are transparent flypaper for the mind, suggestive on many
levels, clear and satisfying on none, each a compelling puzzle, irresistible and
cunning. Or maybe it's just her nasal, reedy vocal, drowsy and languorous, but
so peckishly precise that its trailing t's can smite. An inevitable byproduct
of such profound magic from unprofound materials is a grudging admiration, vitiated
by a streak of resentment at its inexplicable captivating power: why do I like
this so much? The title track illustrates the oddness of many of the strategies
of "Little Steps," including a pervasive 60-cycle hum, plainly intentional and
alternately maddening and seductive, mechanistic percussion, organ reinforcing
the liturgical theme of the lyrics, and a lead vocal seemingly whispered into
your ear, a confidence. But for its dreamy layering of gently chiming guitars
and lap steel, "Design" might be a pop candidate, catchy melody and natural harmonies,
but that darkness keeps seeping from its elliptical lyrics. "Heart of My Head"
is even darker and more mysterious, beginning with a quiet march beat on snare
drum with brushes and a Happy Rhodes-like "na-na" chorus, most of its length a
compelling and insistent development of a simple dramatic theme, a central break
offering just the required catharsis. A sad, haunted beauty of longing informs
"E x E" (East by East), every instrument, every syllable suspended in a crystalline
aural firmament. "Different Today" combines a slightly swinging beat with dramatic,
effects-laden guitars behind Amsterburg's melancholy yet ironic recapitulation
of that failed affair: "I kiss the wish and miracle good-bye / Well, everybody
wants ..." So cold. So sad. So apt. Merrie Amsterburg's command of the elements
of song to express her twilight visions is so complete that listening to "Little
Steps" is like being sucked into a slow-motion whirlpool: there's a touch of terror
mixed with the beauty. --------------------------- Jim Foley

Dear merrie and band, It has been a long time since I have seen your music
performed in person, your music is one of those which I have missed; live at TT
the Bear's and songs like Radio,29 Days and Realm of the Souls. - I have just
seen the photos on this q division web site and I would like to say that I find
them to be so good that I feel that the public would like to see, at least, a
couple of them included with the any cd releases you have planned. The image they
would present to a buyer- listener would be very favorable, I'll sure. Congratulations
for the Boston Music Awards recognition, you deserve it. Marshall & Zoe (R'n'RTV)

I'm a friend of John Sands and he turned me on to your music. I really enjoy
your music! We have a small venue, Hometown Music, near where I live on the New
Jersey shore that often features artists like yourself. Please let me know if
your planning on heading down this way and maybe we could work something out.
I do some PR work for various organizations in the area and I have connections
with all the local newspaper. I would love to have the opportunity to promote
your music in my area. Hometown Music - was organized over three years ago to
promote an appreciation and awareness of singer/songwriters in the southern Ocean
County area through the sponsoring of concert events.

Hi Ms Merrie - There's a "season of rain" in Japan. It's June. Sweet hydrangea
will come out then. They are delicate and so beautiful. Just like your music.
I have two pleasures on a season of rain in this year. Is the recording favourable?
Good luck!

Dear Merrie, Saw you at the Lizard Lounge 4/8. My comment comparing your voice
to Kate Bush's was meant to be totally complimentary. Your voice is so soft and
melodic. I felt like you were singing just to me ... and probably so did everyone
else in the place. Please keep up the excellent work. Hope to see you live again
someday before you get too famous!

Dearest Merrie, please forgive my awkwardness but I have never written to a
musician like this before and I feel a bit groupie-ish. It's just that I feel
so inspired by your music.I have been listening to the re-release
