COOL GIG Francine make the big time
The band Francine have always created a bit of a buzz, but now that buzz is national. On Friday, June 20, Francine will take the stage at the Middle East Downstairs on a bill that also includes the Lilys and the Swirlies. Francine’s latest album, the sublime 28 Plastic Blue Versions of Ending Without You (Q Division), represents an enormous artistic leap forward for the band. Frontman Clayton Scoble has always had a knack for writing intelligent, quirky pop songs (dating back to his days with Poundcake), but this record also features producer John Dragonetti’s signature veil of atmospheric sonic textures and dreamy, hazy tempos, which bathe the band’s songs in an entirely new light. But fear not, rock nation: this isn’t just shoe-gazer stuff – Francine definitely know how to crank up the amps and let it rip.
